Greylisted (try again later)

The server uses greylisting: it deliberately refuses the first attempt from an unknown sender and accepts a proper retry a few minutes later. Real mail systems retry; many spam tools do not.

TypeTemporary failure (soft bounce)
Retry?Yes, after a pause
The addressProbably fine, try later

Common causes

  • First contact between your server and the recipient's server.
  • The recipient domain has greylisting switched on.
  • Your server uses a new IP the receiver has not seen.

How to fix it

  1. Do nothing; a normal mail server retries automatically within minutes.
  2. Check that your mail system has retries enabled and does not give up after the first failure.
  3. For urgent mail, send a few minutes early to leave room for the retry.
  4. Keep your sending IP stable so you are not greylisted again and again.

Frequently asked questions

How long does greylisting delay mail?

Usually five to thirty minutes, sometimes a few hours for the first message only.

Does it affect verification?

Servers that greylist can delay or refuse the check; in that case Mailcut reports the address as Unknown and lets you re-check it later.
